Butterflies Valley & Wine Tasting

Butterflies Valley & Wine Tasting Experience

The must see and the must drink tour!

Hush, hush...thousands of Butterflies are resting here! The Valley of Butterflies is one of the most attractive destinations on the Island and an excellent place for those who wish to enjoy the beauties of nature. You will love the peaceful walk through the shaded, green valley with its small river and the beautiful waterfalls. You are permanently surrounded by butterflies camouflaging themselves against the tree trunks as you walk up towards the monastery at the top, or rest for a while on one of the wooden benches along the way (unguided). The Valley of Butterflies is a unique nature reserve, which apart from its aesthetic value, it is also the site of the only natural forest of Liquidambar orientalis (Oriental Sweetgum trees) in Europe, and a resting point for the Jersey tiger (Panaxia Quadripunctaria), a nocturnal moth. The period with the most butterflies in the valley is from late May until mid September. Now that you met one of the most renowned places in Rhodes, are you also aware that in ancient times Rhodians were considered the largest wine merchants in the Mediterranean? Today’s wines are excellent too. Find out yourselves by visiting a nearby family-run vineyard and winery. Wine is not only to drink, is to smell, observe, taste, sip and To talk about it (Henry VII) and these are exactly what we are going to do. The winery owner guides you to the rich traditions and specialties of his vineyard as you walk through the vines until you sit on the large veranda having the vineyard spreading in front of you. Now it's time to taste some real local mezedes (dishes) at the vineyard's veranda (upon request and on an extra cost). You cannot leave Rhodes without tasting the greek salad, feta cheese, eggplant salad, meat balls, chickpeas pies (pittaroudia), tzatziki, fresh fried potatoes, pumpkin balls, all cooked with Greek olive oil. You also have the opportunity to buy bottles of wines with labels not found in the market, exclusively made for the winery’s visitors.

Reviews

It was just me and my daughter, Vasilis picked us up and stopped for an early morning iced coffee which was a nice touch. Then on to the butterfly valley where we had 2 hours to explore but didn’t feel rushed. Then the wine tasting where we had a private tour of the vineyard and plenty wine to taste as well as olive oils and honey. Next on to an out of the way lunch spot with amazing sea views and a fantastic lunch.
Overall a great trip and worth every penny, would highly recommend

We had an amazing day with our guide Vasilis from Rhodetrip. We were initially hesitant to book this trip given the price and the lack of reviews but we had a great day. As we hadn't rented a car during our stay this trip allowed us to go to places outwit the town that we wouldn't have otherwise managed without spending a fortune on taxis. It was a private tour with just the 2 of us. We were driven to the butterfly valley and spent 2 hours wandering up to the top and back down on our own. The butterfly valley was well worth a visit and worth going early in the morning before it gets busy. We then drove to a nearby vineyard which was beautiful and very picturesque. We had lunch here after our wine tasting and 2 glasses of wine each which were covered by the price of our tour. We had a large selection of dished from the menu and everything was delicious. A few large tour groups stopped in for wine tastings and then left almost as soon as they arrived but our guide made sure we weren't forgotten about amongst the larger groups. The wine was lovely and we bought a couple of bottles from the shop. The one thing we didn't really get as per the tour description was an explanation of the old equipment but it was sitting there for a look at if interested. Overall a great day trip but some may find the price a little steep.
